The JBL Grip is a pocketable Bluetooth speaker built to be thrown in a bag and forgotten about. At 385 g and 15 cm tall it carries a single racetrack driver putting out 16 W, runs for up to 14 hours, and is rated IP68 as well as drop-proof from one metre onto concrete. A rope loop on the back clips it to a rucksack and an ambient light on the rear panel changes colour with the mood. This is the Red colourway.
Key features & benefits
43 x 80 mm racetrack driver
An oval driver fits more cone area into a narrow body than a round one would, which is how a speaker this small still produces useful bass down to 70 Hz.
16 W RMS of JBL Pro Sound
Loud enough for a kitchen, a tent or a hotel room, with a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dB so quiet passages stay clean.
AI Sound Boost
Processing tracks driver excursion in real time and pushes output higher without letting it distort, which matters a lot in a cabinet this size.
Up to 14 hours of play
12 hours as standard plus 2 more with Playtime Boost, so a full day out does not need a top-up.
IP68 and drop-proof
Dust-tight, rated for immersion, and built to survive a one-metre drop onto concrete - so poolside, beach and building-site use are all fair game.
Auracast pairing
Link two Grips as a true stereo pair, or broadcast to a larger group of Auracast speakers from a single phone.
Ambient light with themes
A light on the back panel can be set to different colours, brightness levels and themes from the JBL Portable app, with a dedicated button on the side.
Rope loop and touch controls
The integrated loop clips onto a bag, a belt or a shower rail, and the top controls respond to touch rather than stiff rubber buttons.
Connectivity & compatibility
Bluetooth 5.4 with A2DP 1.4 and AVRCP 1.6, working with any phone, tablet or laptop that supports Bluetooth audio. Auracast handles stereo pairing between two Grips and broadcast to multiple Auracast speakers. The JBL Portable app for iOS and Android adds a 7-band equaliser, ambient light colour and brightness control, and firmware updates. Charging is over USB-C at 5 V / 3 A; note that JBL does not include a charging cable in the box.
What's in the box
- JBL Grip portable speaker (Red)
- Quick start guide
- Warranty card and safety sheet
A USB-C charging cable is not supplied - use any standard USB-C cable and phone charger.
Care & safety
IP68 covers fresh water; rinse the speaker with clean water after it has been in the sea or a chlorinated pool, then dry it before charging. Never plug in the USB-C port while it is wet. The drop rating covers accidents, not deliberate throwing. Avoid leaving it in a closed car in summer, and if you are storing it for months, charge it to around half and top it up every three months so the cell does not degrade. Prolonged listening at high volume can damage hearing.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants a speaker that lives in a bag - commuters, campers, cyclists, students and people who want music in the shower without worrying about it. The IP68 and drop rating make it a sensible choice for children and for building sites. If you want room-filling volume or real bass for a party, step up to the JBL Xtreme or PartyBox range instead.
