The JBL JR 470NC is a wireless over-ear headphone made specifically for children, and the most important thing about it is what it will not do: JBL Safe Sound caps the output so it is designed never to exceed 85 dB, the level widely recommended as safe for young ears. On top of that it adds active noise cancelling for noisy cars and classrooms, up to 50 hours of battery, and a parental control layer in the JBL Headphones app. This is the Blue colourway.
Key features & benefits
JBL Safe Sound, limited to 85 dB
The volume ceiling is built into the headphone itself, so it applies whatever your child is listening on and whoever hands them the tablet.
Active noise cancelling
Cuts the drone of a car, a plane cabin or a busy classroom, which means children naturally turn the volume down rather than up to hear over it.
Up to 50 hours of playtime
50 hours with ANC off and 28 hours with it on, so a school term of homework and car journeys passes between charges. Five minutes on the charger gives another three hours.
Parental controls in the app
The JBL Headphones app lets a parent set an even lower volume cap, set a daily listening limit, see daily and weekly usage reports, and lock the settings behind a PIN.
Built-in microphone
Two microphones handle online classes, video calls with family and voice chat in games without needing a separate headset.
Foldable and adjustable
The cups fold flat for a school bag and the headband adjusts as your child grows, with 12 mm of padding on the band and soft cushions on the cups for long sessions.
Detachable 3.5 mm cable
Plug straight into an aeroplane seat, a school laptop or an older tablet, and keep listening if the battery ever does run out.
Sticker sheet included
A sheet of stickers ships in the box so children can decorate the cups and tell their pair apart from a sibling's.
Connectivity & compatibility
Wireless over Bluetooth on the 2.4-2.4835 GHz band with A2DP 1.4, AVRCP 1.6.2 and HFP 1.8 profiles, so it works with iPhones, Android phones, iPads, Android tablets, Chromebooks, Windows laptops and Nintendo Switch docks that support Bluetooth audio. Multi-point connection keeps two devices paired at once, which suits a child moving between a school laptop and a tablet. The detachable 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable covers wired-only devices. Charging is over USB-C. The JBL Headphones app is free on iOS and Android.

The packaging is plastic-free and folds into a stand for a phone or tablet.
Care & safety
The 85 dB ceiling is a safeguard, not a licence for unlimited listening - paediatric guidance is roughly 60 minutes a day at moderate volume, and the app's daily limit is there to help you enforce it. Wipe the cushions with a slightly damp cloth and let them dry; do not soak them, as these headphones are not water resistant. Keep them out of a hot car. Children should not wear them while cycling or crossing roads, since active noise cancelling removes exactly the sounds they need to hear. Charge with the supplied USB-C cable and a standard phone charger rather than a high-power laptop adaptor.
Who it suits
Children roughly from school age upwards who travel, do homework with music on, take online classes or share a house with noisy siblings. The volume cap and the parental reporting make them a sensible first pair of headphones for a child who is old enough to want their own. Teenagers and adults will find the 85 dB limit restrictive and should look at the JBL Tune or Live over-ear ranges instead.
